PBBM: 4 new EDCA stations strewn over PH
The four new Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) locations would be situated in the northern and southern regions of the nation as well as Palawan, according to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday.
After attending the 126th Anniversary of the Philippine Army’s Founding in Taguig City, Marcos spoke to the media and stated that American and Filipino authorities had already chosen and agreed upon the new sites under the EDCA and would soon make a formal announcement.
“There are four additional sites spread out over the Philippines. others are in the North, others are near Palawan, and some are further South. “They are really in different areas, so iba-iba talaga,” he remarked.
He noted that the Philippines’ continental shelf on the eastern side of Luzon was also taken into consideration as part of the plan to defend the nation’s eastern shore.
When asked if he had spoken to local government representatives who were opposed to having EDCA sites in their areas, Marcos replied that he had spoken to them and stressed the significance of having EDCA sites in their areas.
Yes, he continued, “we made sure to convey to them why it was crucial that we have that and why it will truly benefit their province. “And mukha namang naintindihan nila (I think they already understand),” the speaker continued, “because most ofโฆ those who had raised some concerns are really right now naintindihan naman nila (they understand) and they turn around to support the idea of an EDCA site in their province.”
In addition to the five existing places covered by the EDCA, Marcos allowed US forces access to four more Philippine military installations last month.
The EDCA, which was finalized in August 2013 following eight rounds of negotiations and was signed in 2014, permits US soldiers access to specific Philippine military facilities, as well as the freedom to construct facilities and preposition equipment, planes, and ships, but it forbids permanent basing.
The future facilities at Cesar Basa Air Base in Floridablanca, Pampanga; Fort Magsaysay Military Reservation in Nueva Ecija; Lumbia Airfield in Cagayan de Oro City; Antonio Bautista Air Base in Puerto Princesa, Palawan; and Benito Ebuen Air Base in Cebu are being constructed by the Philippine government and the US under the EDCA.
The US-Philippines alliance is supported by the EDCA, which promotes joint training, drills, and interoperability between Filipino and American personnel.
The biggest military drill ever planned for American and Filipino troops will take place next month.
The United States and the Philippines have agreed to assess the full scope of their maritime cooperation during the 2 + 2 summit in Washington in April, according to a Pentagon statement.
