During its month-long immunization campaign in May, the Department of Health (DOH) plans to give oral doses of measles and polio vaccinations to more than one million children in Eastern Visayas.

The program will cover 550,559 kids aged 0 to 59 months for polio and 471,472 kids aged 9 to 50 months for measles.

The goal of this campaign, according to Elena Villarosa, national immunization program manager for DOH 8 (Eastern Visayas), is to avert an oncoming outbreak and the steady rise in measles and polio cases in the nation.

Health professionals in Biliran, Southern Leyte, Samar, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Leyte, Tacloban City, and Ormoc City participated in a preparatory workshop and microplanning in five batches.

Villarosa gave the populace assurances that the measles-rubella and polio vaccines employed by the government are secure and efficient.

One of the most contagious diseases in the world is measles. It is characterized by high-grade fever, rashes, coughing, itchy eyes, and runny nose, and it can cause complications like pneumonia, blindness, severe diarrhea, brain swelling, and even death.

On the other hand, polio is a potentially crippling illness that results in fever, stiff neck, and muscle weakness, and can ultimately cause permanent paralysis.

According to the DOH, there is no specific therapy for either measles or polio, and vaccination is the only proven method of prevention.
