Iloilo airport expansion should be prioritized, it is urged

Mayor of Iloilo City Jerry P. Treas has asked that the Iloilo International Airport be put on the federal government’s priority projects list.

“Since it is now crowded, we must keep advocating for the development of our international airport. We can cater additional aircraft and more guests if it is extended, Treas remarked in a Thursday Viber message.

The province of Iloilo’s Cabatuan municipality is home to the Iloilo International Airport.

On March 13, the mayor, who serves as the Western Visayas Regional Development Council’s chair of the Infrastructure Development Committee, filed a letter of request to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

The letter from the mayor was forwarded to Timothy John R. Batan, Undersecretary of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), by NEDA’s Investment Programming Group (IPG).

On Thursday, Treas received a copy of the referral letter.

In the letter, NEDA Undersecretary Joseph J. Capuno stated that “Mayor Treas reported that the existing airport in the Western Visayas regional center is already at capacity, and expanding the airport would not only accommodate the increasing number of passengers but would also create more job opportunities and support the growth of the city’s economy.”

The extension is not listed among the proposed infrastructure projects the DOTr submitted for inclusion in the Public Investment Program (PIP) 2023–2028 and the Three Year-Rolling Infrastructure Program (TRIP) 2024–2026, according to Capuno.

Additionally, he asked Batan to inform Treas of any new developments on the unwelcome Public-Private Partnership (PPP) proposal and any other plans for the renovation, operation, upkeep, and expansion of the airport during the previous administration.

“We deem that the subject request is under DOTr’s purview,” Capuno continued. “As the primary entity in charge of planning and programming, coordinating, and implementing, among others, the promotion, development, and regulation of safe, efficient, and reliable transportation services and systems in the country, including air transport facilities.

In a prior interview, Treas stated that he also issued a letter requesting that Aboitiz InfraCapital consider investing in the expansion of the airport as part of the PPP plan.

He continued by saying that the budget for the anticipated expansion was actually utilized during the pandemic.

The expansion was not one of the 10 infrastructure projects for Western Visayas that the present administration chose as flagship projects.
