Romualdez: AFP modernization will increase national stability and peace
The House of Representatives is committed to modernizing the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), according to Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez, who stressed the importance of the AFP to the sovereignty, security, and prosperity of our country on Thursday.
At the HOR-AFP fellowship series (Visayas leg) event held at the Marco Polo Hotel Plaza in Cebu City, Romualdez told lawmakers and senior military officers led by AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Andres Centino, “Our military should be equipped with the latest technological advances and training to respond to the continuing threats that we face.”
“As we all know, a country’s success depends on peace and stability. Political, economic, and social progress cannot prosper without it. And while there are many things that contribute to peace and stability, one of the most important is unquestionably a well-functioning and competent armed forces, he added.
The House leader also emphasized the significance of the HOR-AFP fellowship series in fostering tighter collaboration between lawmakers and defense establishment leaders in his speech.
The gathering in Cebu City was a follow-up to the HOR-AFP fellowship-Luzon leg that took place in December.
“As we all know, the defense and security of our country depend greatly on the working partnership between the legislative and the Military Forces of the Philippines. Activities that foster camaraderie and understanding should be taken part in, he suggested, in order to strengthen this link.
We can develop trust, promote understanding, and ultimately work more effectively as a team to serve our nation and its citizens by spending time together in these situations, Romualdez added.
The bicameral conference committee report on the ideas to change Republic Act 11709, which fixes the tenure of military officers, was recently ratified, and he used the occasion to report on it.
The chief of staff would continue to have a fixed tenure of three years under the bill modifying RA 11709 unless earlier replaced by the President.
The chiefs of the Philippine Military Academy, Army, Air Force, and Navy would serve shorter terms of two years.
The AFP’s retirement age would rise by a year to 57 years of age.
“A regular turnover of leadership, (which) is vital to maintaining a healthy and professional Military Force that is accountable to the people it serves,” Romualdez said of the amendatory measure.
“Regular turnover may make sure that fresh perspectives and ideas are always being brought in, and that the Armed Services have a healthy culture of competitiveness and meritocracy. According to him, the reconciled measure will guarantee professionalism, consistency, and balance in the AFP leadership.
