Employing high school graduates is advised for businesses.
On Saturday, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) asked businesses to take senior high school (SHS) graduates into consideration.
The executive director of CEAP, Jose Allan Arellano, expressed optimism that private businesses will provide SHS graduates with employment prospects as well.
“Ensuring that SHS graduates receive proper training is one of the keys. However, supporting economic growth or more chances is the better option, he added in an interview with Church-run radio station Radio Veritas.
Arellano presented the argument that most businesses favor college graduates over SHS graduates.
“They tend to pick the one with better skills and educational background if they are faced with applicants who are coming straight out of SHS and those who have tertiary education,” he said. “Those with less experience and less education suffer if there are fewer job opportunities in the business sector and more job applicants.”
Only 10% of SHS graduates had jobs, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).
It was also mentioned that 83% of these graduates decided to continue their studies.
