Deals from PBBM’s tour to Japan for AboitizPower are progressing

President and CEO of AboitizPower Manny Rubio stated on Monday that the commercial relationships the company established during President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s official visit to Japan in February are progressing.

Rubio stated that JERA Co., Inc. hopes to start operating its ammonia-co-fired power station by 2030 in a virtual media briefing.

“JERA has promised that by the end of 2030, they will first burn coal and then 30% ammonia. Then, by 2040 or 2050, the complete ammonia firing will begin, he added.

AboitizPower and JERA signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to research “greener fuel” such as the usage of ammonia and hydrogen in power generation during Marcos’ official visit to Japan in February.

For this technology, AboitizPower and JERA will conduct feasibility studies.

The power company also signed a contract with Amber Kinetics, IKS Co., Ltd., and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. which will advance the field of renewable energy.

“On the other hand, the one with Kawasaki, we’ve already stated that the parties will leverage their respective new generation technologies and expertise to optimize the use of renewable energy and the development of renewable energy in the Philippines,” Rubio added.

He claimed that Kawasaki had created a virtual synchronous generator (VSG), an inverter control technology that mimics the functionality of a typical condenser.

“The energy storage actually comes in much quicker than any conventional synchronous condenser to make sure that the lines of the grid remain stable,” he continued.

These collaborations will assist the nation’s ambitions for renewable energy and aid the corporation in implementing its energy transition program.
