In the province of Iloilo, the first case of the XBB.1.16 Omicron subvariant known as Arcturus in the nation was asymptomatic and has since been classified as recovered.

The Department of Health (DOH) informed journalists via Viber on Wednesday that the Arcturus subvariant is a sublineage of the Omicron, which can evade immunization and is thought to be more contagious.

The most recent biosurveillance report from the DOH, which was made public Tuesday evening, included the first instance of the XBB.1.16 Omicron subvariant.

The organization cited the most recent risk assessment conducted by the World Health Organization on April 17 as evidence for its claim that no increases in severity have been documented in nations where XBB.1.16 is reportedly in circulation.

“Bed occupancy levels may have slightly increased in India and Indonesia, but they are still far lower than the results of the earlier variations. Risk assessment is deemed to be low overall,” it continued.

The general population is urged to consistently follow precautions including wearing masks, staying home when ill, and ensuring adequate airflow, particularly when moving around in public.

The general public is also urged to get vaccinated and to receive booster shots because vaccination is still the most reliable and efficient long-term defense against the Covid-19 virus.
