DOLE provides NegOr workers with PHP13.8M in TUPAD help.

More than PHP13.8 million in cash assistance has been given to 3,024 beneficiaries of the government’s Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program by the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) provincial office.

Director Ma. Teresa Tanquiamco, the DOLE-Negros Oriental officer in charge, stated in an interview on Tuesday that the May 1 observance of Labor Day this year will include the distribution of TUPAD community-based cash support to the part-time employees in various towns and cities.

419 workers from Dumaguete City, who received them on Monday at the Labor Day celebration here with Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo attending the program, are the most recent recipients of TUPAD financial assistance, according to Tanquiamco, who spoke in a mix of English and Cebuano.

Each beneficiary earned PHP4,350 on Labor Day, which she said represented 10 days of menial work as determined by the local government unit (LGU).

Street sweepers and canal de-cloggers were among the TUPAD emergency personnel, she continued.

Prior to Labor Day last week, she said, beneficiaries from Bayawan City, Sta. Catalina, Basay, Canlaon City, Amlan, Tanjay City, La Libertad, and Mabinay received additional TUPAD payouts.

She continued, “But they were nonetheless included in the Labor Day reporting of the payouts even if they were released earlier owing to time restrictions and travel considerations.

The distribution of more than PHP3.5 million in livelihood assistance to three associations—the Associacion Agricola de Bais y Tanjay, Inc.; Sanlagan Fisherfolks Livelihood Development Association; and the KAPANIG Multi-Purpose Cooperative—was another success that the DOLE field office here reported for the Labor Day celebration.

Small-time sellers at the “Kadiwa sa Pangulo Para Sa Manggagawa” kiosks made a total of PHP96,000 in sales in a single day, and 68 job seekers were hired right away at the Labor Day job fair, according to Tanquiamco.

The employment expo featured 1,665 openings from four international firms and 2,390 positions from 19 local employers.
