UN chief warns that failing to meet climate objectives might be “disastrous.”
On Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged states to follow through on their commitments and take action to combat climate change.
He sent a video message to the Petersberg Climate Dialogue summit, saying, “The International Panel on Climate Change tells us that breaching 1.5 degrees, even temporarily, could be disastrous.”
Guterres cautioned that if nations stick with their current policies, temperatures will climb by 2.8 degrees by the end of the century.
He urged stronger collaboration to stop reliance on fossil fuels and emphasized that industrialized nations should keep their commitments and give less developed nations financial assistance so they may invest in sustainable energy.
“The climate catastrophe necessitates openness. Only by naming them and confronting them head-on can we find solutions, Guterres added.
“The fact is, we know what to do when to do it, and why in regards to the climate. But we have been turning a blind eye for far too long, he continued.
The two-day climate conference is being held in Germany and will address practical solutions to the climate challenge with participants from about 40 different nations.
The meeting intends to lay the groundwork for productive negotiations at the COP28 Climate Change meeting later this year in the United Arab Emirates.
