Government commits PHP2.4 billion for National Greening Program in 2023

The present administration allocated around PHP2.39 billion for the National Greening Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) this year due to the need to address the effects of climate change.

Amenah Pangandaman, secretary of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), said in a statement on Wednesday that the fund will aid in the government’s efforts to “achieve a sustainable, green, and climate-resilient economy.”

The fund, according to Pangandaman, will support the DENR’s flagship project, which will guarantee “a massive forest rehabilitation initiative in pursuit of sustainable development for poverty alleviation, food security, biodiversity conservation, environmental stability, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.”

The 13,565 hectares of land covered by the greening scheme will need to be maintained and 7,249,642 seedlings will need to be planted.

We shall continue to be dedicated to achieving an inclusive and sustainable transition toward a greener economy, as ordered by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. However, if we ignore our environment, we will not be able to achieve this goal. This is why we prioritize environmental spending while creating our national budget, she added.

This year, the current administration has set aside PHP464.5 billion to support initiatives that would assist combat climate change.

According to the DBM, this allocation is 60.1% larger than the PHP289.7 billion budget for 2022.

Kita naman po natin ngayon pa lamang, ramdam nating lahat ang epekto ng climate change, sa pagpasok ng El Nino. We can already feel the effects of climate change due to the impending El Nino. Therefore, paulit-ulit din pong panawagan ng DBM sa bawat ahensya na maglaan sa kanilang budget proposal ng mga provision para sa pagtugon sa climate change. Because of this, DBM keeps asking the various organizations to fund climate change in their budget requests, Pangandaman continued.
