Village chiefs in Davao Sur accuse election-related harassment.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Some village leaders in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, have accused unidentified suspects of harassing them after they showed support for a particular mayoralty contender.

Barangay Tagabuli head Manuel Lim, who is also the president of the Association of Barangay Captains, said he was harassed in a statement to the Philippine News Agency on Sunday.

He could only make a political connection to the incident.

He explained, “It really has something to do with the impending elections.”

Lim revealed that three individuals on two motorcycles approached him at 4:30 p.m. on February 4 and urged him to stay out of politics to protect his family.

He is unaware of the suspects.

The next day, he got a similar threat through text message from an unknown source, causing him to file a complaint with the Philippine National Police and seek security.

“I wasn’t sure what he meant when he said he’s just around the corner, constantly on the lookout,” Lim explained.

Lim, on the other hand, affirmed his freedom to support anybody he wants.

“They can bother me as much as they want.” “Just don’t include my family,” he stated emphatically.

Village leaders from Barangays Coronon and Tuban have had similar experiences, according to Lim.

He stated that they will send a resolution to the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines, instructing them to tighten and increase monitoring and checkpoint operations in order to prevent such incidents.

Ricky Taylaran, the village chief of Zone-1, supports Lim.

In the same comment, he said, “Let us just follow who the people root for.”

The act was described as a desperate move by Councilor Jose Nelson Sala, who is supported by the local chiefs.

“Do not threaten the barangay captains; they are simply expressing their freedom to choose whoever they want to lead them,” he said on Facebook on Sunday, challenging the culprits to strike him instead.
