Dagupan creates a task force to lessen the consequences of El Nino

The local government here has organized a task team to alleviate the effects of the El Niño phenomenon on inhabitants and the agriculture industry.

In Executive Order 10 released on Thursday, Mayor Belen Fernandez, the head of the task team, said concerted efforts must be conducted to prepare for the phenomena and limit its bad impacts on the people.

“There is a need to constitute a task force to enhance inter-agency coordination in the formulation and implementation of measures to mitigate the effects, particularly in agriculture,” she said.

To assist the people and lessen its terrible impacts, the task team will develop a thorough disaster preparedness and rehabilitation strategy for the El Nino phenomenon. It will also frequently monitor the implementation of the plan.

Fernandez said they would also run a large information campaign to educate the public about the needed measures, as well as request the cooperation of any government institution.

She continued by saying that they will also find potential financial sources to put the later determined measures into action.

“All government agencies and local government units are directed to extend full support to the task force,” she said.

The task force consists of the local chief executive, the head of the City Agriculture Office, the Public Alert Response and Monitoring Center, the City Veterinarian, the City Fire Marshal, the head of the fisherfolk, the chief of the Dagupan City Police, the head of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, members of the academe and the local weather bureau, a City Health officer, and other farmers, irrigators, and fisherfolk associations.

On May 10, Fernandez approved the executive order creating the task force, and on May 11, the task force met right away.

Dagupan City, although an urban area, has its agricultural areas and fishponds as the main source of livelihood for locals.
