The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will be contacted by Mayor Jesus Sacdalan of Alamada, North Cotabato, in order to create a processing plant to transform their “kalabasa” (squash) agricultural produce into wholesome “pancit canton” (stir-fried) noodles.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, former agricultural secretary Emmanuel Piol claimed that farmers in Alamada had complained about the poor prices of their “kalabasa” crop, which only fetches PHP2 per kilo.

According to Piol, the effort to prepare squash is anticipated to give local women jobs and launch a business.

When he was still chairman of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), he claimed, “the local government organized its farmers and established a “Kalabasa Pancit Canton” production center, whose produce was displayed during the MinDA Tienda.”

According to Piol, the Alamada municipal council will adopt a resolution this week requesting DOST assistance in developing and funding the Alamada Kalabasa Pancit Canton Factory, guaranteeing farmers a ready market for their surplus production.

Piol stated that he conveyed the experience of the local administration of Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte, whose squash producers similarly experienced issues with extremely low pricing, during his most recent meeting with Sacdalan.

According to Piol, the Cabadbaran Kalabasa Pancit Canton was one of the best-selling items at the Manila MinDA Tienda. On the second day of the MinDA Tienda event, it was discontinued and sold out for PHP30 per cellophane.
