By 2028, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) hopes to have 2,400 kilometers of protected bike lanes.

There are 564 kilometers of this network in Metro Cebu, Metro Manila, and Metro Davao.

The organization made the announcement in honor of Road Safety Month, which strives to promote road safety and raise public awareness of its negative effects on health and the associated financial implications.

The DOTr stated, “The need for duty and accountability on the road is further underlined as we rethink mobility and turn our focus to the most vulnerable road users.

Everyone is also reminded that everyone on the road deserves complete safety, especially those at risk.

The protected bike lanes are part of the DOTr’s active transport program, one of the organization’s hallmark initiatives that comply with the Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028 and the National Transport Policy.

When the epidemic was at its worst in 2021, and there was little movement due to the limitations, protected bike lanes were built.

During the epidemic, the bike lane network supplemented public transportation and enabled people to arrive at work safely.

87 percent of Filipinos feel that roads in cities and towns will be better if public transportation, bicycles, and pedestrians are favored over private vehicles, according to a 2020 survey from Social Weather Stations and the Department of Health.
