The Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has released two tarsiers into the Zamboanga Norte forest.
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — In the province of Zamboanga del Norte, the Department of Environment and Native Resources – Zamboanga Peninsula (DENR-9) has released a pair of Philippine Tarsiers back to their natural habitat.
The tarsiers were released by workers of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO)-Liloy in the forest of Barangay Delucot, Godod, Zamboanga del Norte, according to DENR-9 information officer Rosevirico Tan.
The tarsiers were retrieved Wednesday by a CENRO-Liloy team responding to a social media post about the capture of two tarsiers in Delucot village, according to Tan.
“The couple were discovered to be in good and healthy condition upon evaluation, and they were released back into their natural habitat the same day,” Tan said.
Although Philippine tarsiers are frequently spotted in small groups (up to five in one location), they are considered solitary creatures.
In a statement, CENRO-Liloy chief Dionisio Rago said, “These nocturnal mammals are exceedingly sensitive and have been known to die or commit suicide when housed in captivity.”
Rago advised the public to report any animal concerns to them promptly via the hotline 0948-147-12-50 so that proper handling and recovery activities may be carried out.
The release of the two tarsiers on Thursday was timed to coincide with the DENR’s World Wildlife Day celebrations, according to Tan.
World Wildlife Day is observed to raise awareness of the numerous benefits that wildlife protection brings to humanity.
The Philippine tarsier, also known as “Basing,” is categorized as a near-threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to a considerable decline in its population.
They are protected under Republic Act 9147, often known as the Wildlife Resources Act, which makes it illegal to hunt, injure, kill, maim, or keep them as pets.
