The Land Transportation Office has set a maximum fee of PHP300 for the cost of the medical examination for applications for a driver’s license and a student permit in its approved medical facilities.

Outgoing LTO chief assistant secretary Jay Art Tugade stated on Monday that the action was taken in response to complaints about the exorbitant cost of medical exams ranging from PHP500 to PHP700.

Tugade declared, “This is a huge amount for ordinary citizens. Makigat na ang halaga na ito para sa ating mga ordinaryong mamamayan.”

If the directive is broken, medical establishments and clinics risk having their accreditation suspended for 90 days and being fined PHP 10,000.

Infringers face a PHP15,000 fine and 180-day suspension for the second offense and a lifetime disqualification for the third.

The agency may restrict medical examination fees under Memorandum Circular 2018-2157, signed on November 27, 2018, even though the maximum amount is not specified.

Accredited medical clinics have various fees and levies that cause rate discrepancies. The particular maximum medical examination prices to be charged from driver-applicants by licensed medical clinics were defined by the LTO for the sake of standardization, according to the circular.

The new memo signed by Tugade becomes effective 15 days after it is published nationally.
