Taxpayers who have several TINs face criminal culpability, according to BIR.

Owners of numerous tax identification numbers (TINs) may be subject to criminal prosecution, according to a warning from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

The acquisition of several TINs is a “serious offense” that could result in legal penalties and substantial income losses for the government, according to a statement released by the BIR on Tuesday. The law states that only one TIN shall be granted to a taxpayer.

According to the bureau, the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997 is broken if someone obtains more than one TIN.

The perpetrator will be subject to a $1,000 fine, a maximum six-month sentence, or both.

Those who obtain several TINs could also experience issues while creating a bank account, applying for a loan, or in other financial operations.

The BIR gives Every taxpayer a TIN, a special identification number. It allows the BIR to monitor and track taxpayers’ adherence to their tax responsibilities.

According to the BIR, a person who unintentionally obtained several TINs must file BIR Form 1905 to the regional district office where the taxpayer is registered to request the deletion of the additional TINs.

The BIR often advises all taxpayers to monitor their TINs and ensure they are not duplicated. This will undoubtedly support a fair and equal tax environment and preserve the tax system’s integrity, according to BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr.

“The BIR has put in place measures to track down and prosecute people who break the TIN provision.”
