With only a few days remaining before the May 31 deadline, health professionals administering the measles-rubella-oral polio vaccine supplemental immunization activity (MR OPV SIA) in Antique are currently undertaking mop-up activities to ensure no target children are overlooked.

According to Dr. Rommel Garganera, the provincial director of the Department of Health (DOH), “With a few more days left, we are still a little short of our target that the BHWs and other health workers have been instructed to visit the families of these children.”

According to him, as of May 23, the province of Antique had only achieved 59.77 percent of its MR goals, or 34,948 out of the 58,472t objective.

Furthermore, only 34,212 out of the 68,339 targets, or 50.06 percent, have used the OPV.

According to Garganera, “There may be children who needed to be reached who were unable to receive the immunization earlier because they were sick or for other reasons were not brought to the Rural Health Units (RHUs), Barangay Health Stations, and other temporary fixed sites.”

Additionally, he noted that since the objective is predicated on the predicted population, it’s possible that fewer children reside in the province.

While the OPV was for infants 0 to 59 months, the MR is for 9 to 59 months of age.

Garganera stated, “We are still hopeful, nevertheless, to increase the immunization coverage, especially with the findings from the remote communities still pouring in.

He continued by saying that the BHWs had played a significant role in lobbying and demand generation from the month-long campaign’s beginning, particularly in the province’s geographically isolated and disadvantaged region (GIDA).
