The P25.7 billion irrigation project in Northern Luzon is underway.

On Wednesday, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) said that a costly irrigation project to give farmers in the northern section of Luzon access to water year-round is now in the works.

The Ilocos Norte-Ilocos Sur-Abra Irrigation Project (INISAIP), estimated to cost PHP25.7 billion, will irrigate more than 14,000 hectares of farmland in the three provinces once finished, according to NIA Administrator Eduardo Guillen.

In a media interview, Guillen stated, “The project was conceived during the time of the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos and said the project is now on the go under the current administration.”

As of this publication, the National Economic Development Authority’s assigned NIA workers were working to acquire all the necessary paperwork for the huge irrigation project in this region of Luzon.

While right-of-way NIA officials began communicating with the owners of the traversed lots of INISAIP, work on the access roads leading to the 126.41-meter high storage dam across the Palsiguan River in Lagayan, Abra has already begun.

Guillen expressed optimism that the NIA, working closely with the departments of public works and agriculture as well as other concerned government agencies, will be able to address the issues by building high dams that will be used for irrigation, power, flood control, and aquaculture projects. A looming water crisis that is likely to have a significant impact on farmers.

Due to a lack of irrigation infrastructure, Ilocos farmers have long complained about having trouble getting enough water to irrigate their fields, especially in the second district of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.
