On Monday, an official of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) stated that adding a new berth to the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) is expected to increase cargo transportation efficiency and trading volumes.

The International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), which operates the MICT, was assured of Jaime Bautista’s support for developing the new cargo docking site during his inspection of the MICT and the groundbreaking for Berth 8.

The DOTr is working with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) to assist informal settler households (ISF) that may need to be moved to develop access roads to the new berth.

Because we also have projects that call for the settlement of ISFs, we had some negotiations with the DHSUD about transferring the [affected] ISFs, according to Bautista.

Berth 8 at MICT was constructed to accommodate the cargo terminal’s growing volume need and accommodate newer container ships that can carry up to 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).

It has a yard area of 12 hectares and a quay length of 400 meters.

Once finished, it will increase the MICT’s yearly capacity from 3 million to 3.5 million TEUs.
