More than PHP10 billion has been allocated by Maynilad Water Services Inc. (Maynilad) for pipe replacement projects to be carried out in various locations throughout its concession territories from 2023 to 2027.

In a news release on Tuesday, Maynilad stated that as part of its plan to modernize the distribution system and cut water losses, it would replace 477.2 kilometers of aging, leaking pipes over the next five years.

“The pipe network we inherited from Maynilad when we took over in 2007 includes the oldest water infrastructure in Asia. For the sake of our consumers, we’re committed to modernizing our network, said Randolph Estrellado, chief operating officer of Maynilad.

When all of the pipes in the West Zone were replaced, 3,643 kilometers were covered, or 78% of the distribution system the water company received from the government upon re-privatization in 2007.

Pipe replacements were finished in Caloocan, Quezon, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Manila, Pasay, Paranaque, Imus, and Muntinlupa between January and April 2023.

These procedures are being expedited to recover additional water supplies in time for the El Nio weather phenomena.

Maynilad allocated over PHP4 billion for its Non-Revenue Water (NRW) Management Program for 2023 alone, a 25% increase from the PHP3.2 billion it spent on NRW investments in 2022.
