DENR urges the preservation of forest habitat to protect the Philippine Eagle
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through its Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB), appeals to all Filipinos to assist in protecting forest habitat in order to ensure the conservation of future generations of Philippine eagles and their territories, as well as to enable new generations to thrive and coexist with other threatened wildlife.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, DENR Assistant Secretary and concurrent BMB Director Marcial Amaro Jr. said that as the nation observes the 25th Philippine Eagle Week (PEW) from June 4 to 10, the department reflects on its accomplishments over the past quarter-century in protecting the recognizable and seriously endangered Philippine eagle.
According to Amaro, the DENR-BMB has strengthened and synchronized conservation efforts and put out initiatives to reduce both direct and indirect risks to Philippine eagle populations through the preservation of national patrimony.
Restoration of habitat, enforcement of the law, management of captive and wild populations, research, and conservation education are all pertinent conservation measures, according to him.
In light of the impending risks posed by climate change, Amaro stated that “the habitats conserved locally and protected by communities significantly contribute to environmental stability and security of human well-being.”
Amaro noted that additional work is necessary to guarantee the survival and viability of the highly sought raptor, which is referred to as a “national treasure.”
He claimed that habitat degradation and poaching pose ongoing threats to the Philippine eagle, scientifically known as Pithecophaga Jefferyi.
Numerous events were held in conjunction with the holiday, among them an art exhibition featuring works by Filipino artists that featured the Philippine eagle.
According to Amaro, the artists even paid a registration fee that was contributed to the construction of a water system for a hamlet in Davao City that aids in the preservation of a Philippine eagle habitat.
DENR Secretary Antonia Loyzaga urged lawmakers to make strengthening Republic Act (RA) 9147, also known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, a top priority in September of last year.
According to Loyzaga, it is imperative that lawmakers approve the amendment to RA 9147 in order to further group efforts and initiatives for the sustainable management of the nation’s wildlife resources.
The biggest forest raptor in the Philippines and epedemic there is the Philippine eagle.
The majestic bird, which can be found on the islands of Mindanao, Samar, Luzon, and Leyte, has been designated as critically endangered by Department Administrative Order 2019-09, also known as the Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and Their Categories.
Through Proclamation No. 615, the critically endangered Philippine Eagle was elevated to the status of a national emblem in 1995. Its distinctiveness, strength, and love of freedom serve as a reflection of the characteristics of the Filipino people.
