On Monday, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) warned about a new human trafficking scheme trend involving phony Commission on Filipino Overseas (CFO) credentials.

In a statement, BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco advised Filipinos to be on the lookout for illicit recruiters’ new tactics.

“We think this is a new form of human trafficking, taking advantage of Filipinas to labor in phony call centers, as mail-order brides, or as unlicensed surrogates… As a result, we are warning Filipinos about this fraud,” he stated.

According to the BI, obtaining the CFO credential requires finishing the mandatory pre-departure seminar and the CFO’s Guidance and Counselling Programme (GCP).

The seminar aims to enlighten Filipinos who are dating or married to people of other nations about the cultural and social realities found abroad.

However, some Filipinos become victims of the strategy used by internet fixers to secure them with bogus certificates, allowing them to waive attendance on the GCP.

Amid this, the BI committed to strengthening its partnership with the CFO.

Such strategies won’t succeed, according to Tansingco, who created a shared information system between the BI and the CFO.

At the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last June 16, immigration authorities detained a victim, age 29, who was traveling to Pudong, China, with her alleged Chinese husband.

Nevertheless, the verification revealed that her CFO’s GCP certificate was a forgery.

The BI detected two cases in a similar event in May of last year.
