🌾💧 DA Implements Water Management Strategies to Counter El Niño Effects

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has introduced water management strategies to mitigate the impact of the El Niño phenomenon on agricultural production.

🔬 The DA promotes rainwater harvesting as a key strategy, encouraging food producers to collect and store rainwater given the country’s average rainfall volume of 2,348 millimeters.

⛑️ Other initiatives include the improvement of irrigation canals, small-scale irrigation projects, and replacing unserviceable pumps and engine sets.

💼 U-Nichols Manalo, Chairperson of the DA’s National El Niño Team, highlights the collaboration between the department’s operating units to address the potential effects of the weather phenomenon.

🚜 The DA leads the food security agenda within an inter-agency task force that includes the departments of trade, labor, interior, social work, and energy, as well as the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

🤝 Other cooperating agencies are the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, and the Philippine Crop Insurance Corp.

📝 President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced the upcoming release of an El Niño Mitigation Plan to engage the public in national actions against the effects of the weather phenomenon.

⚠️ Weather experts predict unusual warming of sea surface temperatures, strengthening the abnormal weather patterns associated with El Niño, leading to below-normal rainfall, dry spells, and droughts in some areas.

🌧️ However, the western part of the country may still experience above-normal rainfall due to the enhanced southwest monsoon.
