Over 2K Luzon-Bound Passengers Stranded in N. Samar Due to Typhoon Egay

TACLOBAN CITY – The number of stranded Luzon-bound passengers in Allen, Northern Samar, has reached 2,334 as of Tuesday noon due to the continuous sea trip cancelations in the province caused by Super Typhoon Egay.
The Philippine Coast Guard in Northern Samar reported that seven ferries had canceled their trips, resulting in the growing number of stranded passengers at the Allen port since early Monday.
In addition to the passengers, 412 trucks, buses, and cars cannot proceed with their journey.
The Northern Samar provincial disaster risk reduction management office (PDRRMO) has provided food packs to those in the Allen Ferry terminal building to support the affected passengers.
Despite lifting the tropical cyclone wind signal in Northern Samar and other parts of Samar by the state weather bureau, ferries are still not permitted to sail due to Sorsogon being under tropical cyclone wind signal number 1. Northern Samar is also experiencing strong winds.
The PDRRMO emphasized that all vessels must exercise precautionary measures and remain vigilant in monitoring the typhoon’s movement if they are expected to be affected by weather disturbance. The resumption of vessel voyages will only occur upon improved weather and sea conditions until further notice.
The Matnog ferry terminal in Sorsogon is the exit point from Luzon to Eastern Visayas, while the Allen port in Northern Samar serves as the region’s entry from Luzon. These ports are vital parts of the northeastern seaboard nautical highway, connecting the country’s three major island groups—Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
For decades, roll-on roll-off ferries have been traversing the San Bernardino Strait, facilitating the transport of passengers and vehicles to and from the Northern Samar ports and Matnog port in Sorsogon. The average travel time for this route is one hour and 30 minutes, covering a distance of 28 kilometers.
As of Tuesday noon, Super Typhoon Egay’s eye was estimated to be approximately 270 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. The typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and up to 230 kph gustiness.
