No Signs of Slowing Down for Mayon Volcano’s Effusive Eruption 🌋

🌋 MANILA – The effusive eruption of Mayon Volcano continues with a notable decrease in slow lava effusion from its summit crater in the last 24 hours. Despite this, the volcano remains at Alert Level 3, indicating a “relatively high level of unrest.”

Dr. Teresito Bacolcol, the officer in charge of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Geology (Phivolcs) – Geophysics Research and Development Division, explained that effusive eruption involves the release of magma on the volcano’s slope. Mayon Volcano has been under Alert Level 3 since June 8, prohibiting anyone from entering the 6-km. permanent danger zone.

As of Friday, the volcano released approximately 19 million cubic meters of volcanic materials. To put this into perspective, Bacolcol likened this amount to around 1.4 million dump trucks, each with a capacity of about 14 cubic meters.

While Phivolcs hopes to avoid an explosive eruption, they continue to monitor the parameters closely. Bacolcol shared that an effusive eruption might persist for a few more weeks, whereas an explosive eruption like the one in 2000 only took two weeks, and the effusive eruption in 2014 lasted for three months.

Despite the challenges, volcanic eruptions have their benefits. Volcanic ash is known for its fertility, making areas around active volcanoes fertile and appealing for habitation.

The latest bulletin from Phivolcs reported 40 volcanic earthquakes, including 39 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, and 45 rockfall events recorded by the Mayon Volcano Network. Evacuation from the permanent danger zone is advised due to potential lava flows, rockfalls, and other volcanic hazards.

Bacolcol emphasized that the situation is being assessed daily as the parameters fluctuate, making it challenging to predict if an explosive eruption might occur.
