Dialysis Tops List of PhilHealth Insurance Claims in Eastern Visayas
TACLOBAN CITY – Hemodialysis has emerged as the leading medical procedure that the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has covered this year, owing to the continuous increase in chronic kidney failure cases.
Rosario Suyom, the Chief of the healthcare delivery management division of PhilHealth-Eastern Visayas, shared that within the first six months of the year, their office disbursed PHP 191.04 million to cover 54,584 hemodialysis sessions.
“It is estimated that approximately 50,000 patients in the region have availed of the expanded package for patients with chronic kidney disease. Hemodialysis has consistently held the number one spot in the list of procedures PhilHealth covers in the region since establishing all case rates in 2012,” Suyom informed reporters during a press briefing.
Though specific data for claims from hemodialysis patients in 2022 was unavailable, Suyom affirmed that the upward trend remains consistent.
“It tops the list. This health status is based on our data and shared with the Department of Health as part of the government’s endeavor to raise awareness about the importance of kidney health and to mitigate the frequency and impact of kidney diseases,” Suyom added.
Recently, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation has expanded its package for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 5 to 156 sessions per year, up from 90 sessions previously covered annually.
As per PhilHealth Circular 2023-009, the agency will now provide PHP 2,600 for each session, up to PHP 405,600 per year, for CKD stage 5 patients.
To avail of this package, patients must be recommended by a licensed doctor for hemodialysis and listed in the PhilHealth dialysis database. The hemodialysis facility will monitor the number of sessions the patient undergoes.
Hemodialysis is a crucial treatment that filters waste and water from a person’s blood, replicating the function of a healthy kidney. It helps manage blood pressure and maintains a balance of essential minerals like potassium, sodium, and calcium in the bloodstream.
