Davao Region Records Over 8K Dengue Cases, 28 Deaths since January 🦟

🦟 Dr. Annabelle Yumang, the director of the Department of Health in Davao Region (DOH-11), disclosed that the region has reported more than 8,000 cases of dengue fever and 28 related deaths since the beginning of the year.

During a weekly forum at a mall in the region, Dr. Yumang shared the distribution of dengue-related deaths, with nine fatalities in Davao City, eight in Davao del Norte, five in Davao Oriental, three in Davao del Sur, two in Davao de Oro, and one in Davao Occidental.

Contrary to past assumptions that dengue is predominantly prevalent during the rainy season, the disease has become a year-round concern. Dr. Yumang emphasized that they are observing dengue cases every month.

Among the areas in the region, Davao City registered the highest number of cases with 3,480, followed by Davao de Oro with 1,099, Davao del Norte with 1,947, Davao del Sur with 909, Davao Oriental with 831, and Davao Occidental with 415 cases.

The surge in cases is alarming as it has already doubled the figures reported in 2022, which had 4,559 cases for the entire year.

Dr. Yumang underscored the crucial role of local government units in containing the outbreak through active participation in cleanup campaigns targeting the elimination of mosquito-breeding sites.

To further prevent the escalation of cases, Dr. Yumang stressed the need to intensify the “4S” campaign:

πŸ” Search and destroy mosquito breeding places,
πŸ₯ Seek early consultation,
πŸ€’ Practice self-protection methods, and
🌫️ Support fogging operations in areas with a consistent rise in cases over two consecutive weeks.

Dengue fever is transmitted through the bite of an Aedes Aegypti mosquito carrying the virus. Initial symptoms mimic flu-like manifestations but can progress to severe dengue, a life-threatening condition.

As the region faces this health challenge, cooperation between health authorities and the public is essential to combat dengue effectively and safeguard the community’s well-being. πŸ₯πŸ’š
