Pfizer is working on a booster Covid-19 vaccine, but the CDC thinks it’s unneeded
Pfizer, a drugmaker based in the United States, announced on July 10, 2021, that it plans to develop a booster dose of its coronavirus vaccine to better protect people from evolving variants, raising concerns among the unvaccinated and causing confusion across the country about whether a booster shot is required.
Pfizer and BioNTech, a German partner, said on Thursday that they would seek clearance for a booster injection in the coming weeks, estimating that patients will need a booster dose six to 12 months after being completely vaccinated.
In the continuing study of the third dosage of its existing Covid-19 vaccine, the two firms claimed they’ve observed promising results.
The study’s preliminary findings show that a booster dose given six months after the second dose has a consistent tolerability profile and produces high neutralization titers against variants such as the highly transmissible Delta variant, which can be five to ten times higher than after two primary doses.
“As shown in real-world statistics published by the Israel Ministry of Health, vaccine effectiveness in avoiding both infection and symptomatic sickness has decreased six months after immunization, notwithstanding high efficacy in preventing severe diseases,” the two firms said in a statement.
They predicted that vaccination effectiveness against symptomatic illness would deteriorate with time and that variations would continue to develop.
According to their findings, a third dosage may be required within six to twelve months following complete immunization to retain the greatest levels of protection.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a joint statement on vaccination boosters shortly after Pfizer and BioNTech’s announcement.
“At this moment, Americans who have been properly vaccinated do not need a booster injection,” the statement stated.
People who are completely vaccinated are protected against serious disease and death, according to the two organizations, even new variations like the extremely infectious Delta variant, which is currently the prevalent strain in the United States.
“The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are engaged in a science-based, rigorous process to determine whether or not a booster is required,” according to the statement.
According to the statement, data from pharma firms would only be used to inform the decision in part.
According to the CDC, Delta, which was originally discovered in India and is now prevalent in over 100 countries, accounting for more than half of all new infections in the United States in the two weeks ending July 3.
Experts are worried that the variation will result in a spike in new cases this autumn, with the unvaccinated population bearing the brunt of the impact.
According to CDC statistics, around 47.8% of the US population is completely vaccinated against Covid-19, and 55.3 percent has gotten at least one dose as of Friday.
