DTI: Alert Level 3 in the NCR to reintroduce 300,000 jobs

As Metro Manila moves from Alert Level 4 to Alert Level 3, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez predicts that more employment would return to the labor market.

“With most of the remaining economic sectors, particularly the service sectors, to be reopened in Metro Manila, and at higher operating capacities as a result of the de-escalation to Alert Level 3, we expect most of the remaining 300,000 displaced workers to be back to work,” Lopez said in a Viber message to trade reporters on October 14, 2021.

However, the DTI head said that employment numbers had not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.

This is due to the fact that commercial institutions are not yet functioning at full capacity, he said.

There are also certain businesses that are not permitted to reopen, such as live entertainment, karaoke bars, and children’s amusement facilities.

Lopez said that since Alert Amount 3 is comparable to general community quarantine (GCQ), shuttered commercial establishments are anticipated at 4%, the same level as when the National Capital Region (NCR) was put under GCQ earlier this year.

The NCR will be placed on Alert Level 3 by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases on October 16, 2021.

Apart from boosting businesses’ operational capacity, the government has permitted theaters to reopen after they had been closed for more than a year.
