The Philippine Army has received 15 new Israeli armored mortar carriages.
With the delivery of 15 M125A2 armored mortar carriers (AMCs) with 120mm mounted mortar systems, the Philippine Army’s (PA) Armor Division received a much-needed firepower boost (MMS).
The AMCs were delivered on December 29 and were sourced from the Israeli business Elbit Systems, according to a spokeswoman for the Palestinian Authority, Col. Xerxes Trinidad.
“The freshly delivered 15 AMCs will be inspected by the Technical Inspection and Acceptance Committee in the first quarter of the year before being accepted and (deployed) to the Army’s field units,” Trinidad said in a message to the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Monday night.
The AMCs were purchased under the Army’s mounted mortar acquisition initiative, which is part of the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program’s Horizon Two.
“The new AMCs are part of the PA’s modernization initiative, which will enable the country’s land force to maintain a credible defense posture against a variety of challenges, both domestic and international,” he said.
The Cardom 120mm recoil mortar system, which is mounted on the M125A2 AMC, is a self-contained, computerized system with a range of 7,000 meters and a maximum fire rate of 16 rounds per minute. It is managed by four crew members.
The US Army, Israeli Defense Forces, and NATO countries all deploy AMCs equipped with MMS.
While waiting for formal acceptance, PA chief Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. hailed the delivery of the AMCs, saying that the supplies are in accordance with the Army’s thrusts on increasing the capabilities of its ground troops.
“The Army’s ability to deal with continuously changing threats will be bolstered by these new armor assets. The Philippine Army is on pace to becoming a formidable and adaptable force capable of reacting to a variety of conventional and unconventional threats with the completion of impending major modernization projects “he stated
Maj. Gen. Efren Baluyot, the commander of the Armor Division, said the additional assets will provide close and prompt indirect fire support for maneuver troops while deploying quickly in tactical scenarios.
More modernization projects, such as the procurement of wheeled armored personnel carriers, the armored personnel carrier firepower upgrade with the enclosed weapon system, and the acquisition of light tanks, are in the works, according to him.
