The Palace is ‘concerned’ over alleged Comelec server hacking.

Malacanang voiced alarm on Tuesday over the alleged hacking of the Commission on Elections’ systems (Comelec).

“We’ll wait for any further information from Comelec on this.” Siyempre, nababahala rin kami (Of course, we’re frightened), obviously, we’re concerned about this kung totoo man ito (if this is real),” In a press conference at the White House, acting presidential spokesperson Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said.

Nograles stated that the Palace will wait for the Comelec to provide an official statement on the alleged server breach.

The Manila Bulletin claimed on Monday that on January 8, hackers were able to download “more than 60 gigabytes of data that might potentially disrupt the May 2022 elections.”

Hackers were able to obtain files including, among other things, usernames and PINs for vote-counting equipment (VCM).

Hackers will not be able to download VCM usernames and PINs, according to Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez, because “such information still does not exist in Comelec systems simply because the configuration files—which include usernames and PINs—have not yet been finalized.”

He questioned the report’s authenticity, saying it “provides scant proof for its accusations.”

Similarly, Jimenez pointed out that the Manila Bulletin report failed to include documentation of such verification.

He did say, though, that the Comelec is verifying the claimed data leak.

He also informed the public of the company’s “complete and meticulous compliance with the Data Privacy Act, as well as ongoing cooperation with the National Privacy Commission.”
