According to local media on Sunday, communication problems have been reported in Tonga as a result of a large underwater volcanic eruption in the Pacific nation.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern stated at a press conference that communication with Tonga had been difficult due to the eruption, but that her country’s Defense Force and Foreign Ministry were trying to assist Tonga, according to the public broadcaster Radio New Zealand (RNZ).

“The New Zealand High Commission in Nuku’alofa (Tonga’s capital) is in communication with local authorities, and damage assessments are continuing,” the statement said.

People began utilizing social media to contact their loved ones while phone connections and the internet were down in parts of Tonga, according to RNZ.

“There are unconfirmed indications that Tonga’s tsunami advisory is still in effect, and that Tonga’s prime minister has authorized bakeries, fuel stations, and shops to offer basics,” the statement said.

After the volcanic eruption in Tonga, the US National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the US and Canada’s western coasts.

Friday morning, the volcano, which is 65 kilometers (40 miles) north of Nuku’alofa, began spewing ash, steam, and gas.
