As a first step, Pope Francis has donated over 100,000 euros (around PHP5 million) to the victims of Typhoon Odette.

Church-run According to Radio Veritas, the Holy Father allocated financial aid for the rehabilitation of destroyed homes and churches in regions badly affected by the tragedy through the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development in partnership with the Apostolic Nunciature in the Philippines.

The gesture shows Pope Francis’ empathy with typhoon victims.

In a statement, the Vatican said, “It is intended to be an urgent expression of the Holy Father’s emotion of spiritual closeness and paternal encouragement towards the people and territory afflicted.”

Immediately following his Angelus on December 19, the Pope offered prayers for the victims of the typhoon’s devastation.

Currently, the church’s social arms, including Caritas Philippines and Caritas Manila, are assisting with relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction in the ten badly affected dioceses.

Caritas Manila has provided cash support to the impacted communities of up to PHP20 million.

Surigao, Tagbilaran, and Talibon in Bohol, Maasin, Cebu, Kabankalan, and Dumaguete in Negros, Taytay and Puerto Princesa in Palawan, and the Archdiocese of Cagayan De Oro are among them.

Caritas Philippines, on the other hand, continues to visit impacted communities, led by national director Kidapawan Bishop Jose Colin Bagaforo, to personally give financial aid and assess the degree of the damage caused by the recent tragedy.
