The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) announced on Wednesday that the three-month-long closure of the fishing season in northern Palawan had been lifted.

The BFAR indicated in a statement that the closed fishing season in northeastern Palawan, which prohibited the use of purse seine, ringnet, and bagnet in collecting roundscad (galunggong) within the conservation area, was lifted yesterday, February 1, 2022.

To safeguard and replenish the Decapterus species, popularly known as “galunggong,” the fisheries sector and other stakeholders reached a joint agreement in 2015, suspending the fishing season within the conservation area in northeastern Palawan from November to January every year.

Secretary of Agriculture William Dar signed a certificate of necessity earlier this year to import 60,000 metric tons of small pelagic fish to meet demand in the first quarter of 2022.

Apart from the halted fishing season, the level of damage to the fishery sector caused by Typhoon Odette in December of last year has tilted the market’s fish supply balance.
