In the face of the looming menace of the Omicron variant now wreaking havoc across Europe, an infectious diseases expert and member of the Department of Health (DOH) Technical Advisory Group is urging for increased vaccination against the coronavirus.

Dr. Edsel Salvana stated the newly found variant may be less responsive to vaccines in preventing infection, but the efficacy would not be “zero” during President Rodrigo Duterte’s Talk to the People on Monday.

“If ever, and we still expect the immunizations to protect against serious sickness, mababawasan lang (it is diminished). Salvana stated in his presentation that one of the proposals for delaying the variant’s admission would be to increase the green country procedures to yellow country protocols in order to improve the monitoring of people entering the nation.

Researchers in South Africa and around the world are conducting studies to better understand several facets of Omicron, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In terms of transmissibility, the WHO stated that it is still unknown if it is more transmissible than other variations, such as Delta, or whether the infection causes more severe disease.

Omicron is rapidly spreading across Europe, leading local governments and other countries to reopen borders to stem the spread.

Apart from vaccination and tighter border restrictions, Salvana believes that following the bare minimum of public health regulations, such as wearing a face mask and shield and keeping a safe distance, will assist to prevent the disease from spreading.

Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Eduardo Ao announced that police have reinforced border procedures to better monitor incoming migrants, particularly along the country’s southern borders.

“Although we have implemented border restrictions, our southeast border is porous. Iyon ang dapat bantayan po kasi kung mayroon mang pumasok na mga Filipino Muslims from Sabah, Malaysia, or Indonesia at hindi po dumaan sa seaport, airport, eh ‘yun po ‘yung talagang kailangan mabantayan (We need to keep a close eye on those arriving from Sabah, Malaysia, or Indonesia, and those who do” Ao stated.

He stated that if alert levels were to be raised as a result of Omicron, the requirement to wear face shields would be reinstated.
