Hundreds of people are unable to take the bar exam because of Covid and policy violations.

The two-day Bar Exam was completed on Sunday, although not all 11,790 applicants who paid application fees showed up at the 31 local exam venues spread over 22 local government units.

At least 219 examinees tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday, according to the Office of the Bar Chairperson, while an indeterminate number of examinees were disqualified for breaking regulations and the Honor Code.

The number of positive tests is based on the antigen testing conducted by the Supreme Court (SC) and the examinees who revealed their results.

Non-disclosure of previous positive Covid-19 test results, bringing mobile phones into examination rooms, and accessing social media within the testing center premises during the one-and-a-half-hour lunch break were among the violations, according to Bar Bulletin No. 39, signed by Bar chairperson, SC Associate Justice Marvic Leonen.

The disqualification only applies this year, as the Bar is being held for the first time in two years owing to the epidemic.

“Do not give up hope.” Those who tested positive for Covid-19 were assured by Leonen that their time would come.

Those who were detected breaking policies were counseled by Leonen to think about what they had done.

“Keep in mind that you can still change your story. You will not be remembered as the examinee who, in his or her desire to pass the exam, ruined his or her honor for the rest of his or her life. “Recover your honor by learning from your mistakes,” he wrote.

Leonen believes he owes it to those who put their life on the line for the 2020/2021 Bar test to succeed despite the odds.

On Friday, 11,378 people sat for the exam.

At least 12 examinees were permitted to take the exam in the traditional handwritten style, while one examinee with an illness that rendered his hands immobile was assisted by a stenographer who encoded his responses.

It was the first time the Bar was held in different locations, was cut from four days to two, and was conducted entirely digitally, with examinees bringing their own laptops and downloading questions through a secure online program.

The exam was originally set for January 16, 23, 30, and February 6, but due to the pandemic and the effects of December’s Typhoon Odette in the provinces, it was abbreviated and rescheduled for January 23 and 25.

The SC had to reschedule it due to a high number of positive Covid-19 cases and those in quarantine among examinees and Bar officials.
