A P16-million DOST funding has been awarded to a research business to develop vax against. ASF vaccines.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) announced on Wednesday that BioAssets Corporation, veterinary research, and diagnostics firm, has received PHP15.95 million in funding.

The DOST stated that it acknowledges the need for animal vaccination research and development (R&D), and that the funds would be used to obtain the most up-to-date technology that will aid in the development of a point-of-need animal health diagnostic system.

In addition, in resource-constrained areas, a mobile laboratory unit with portable diagnostic devices will be put up.

According to the DOST, the BioAssets Corporation intends to provide foundational support for the development of an African swine fever (ASF) vaccine.

In a statement, DOST Secretary Fortunato de la Pea said, “Through R&D, we are able to find novel technology that will protect public health and maintain food safety.”

The aid was made possible by the DOST’s Business Innovation Through Science and Technology (BIST) for Industry initiative, which builds local enterprises’ skills by enabling them to innovate and develop competitiveness through equipment procurement.

According to the Department of Science and Technology, 51 out of 81 provinces in the Philippines had verified instances of ASF as of July 2021, according to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization.

“The first instance was recorded in July 2019, some months prior to the global dissemination of the Covid-19 virus,” it said.

ASF is a virus that infects pigs and produces bleeding in the pig’s skin and internal organs. It has a substantial influence on the swine sector, and if not addressed, it might have a negative impact not just on agriculture but also on the economy, according to the DOST.

There is currently no vaccine or treatment available for ASF.

The government, on the other hand, has been taking preventative steps and forming partnerships with local and international R&D-based organizations and authorities in order to study and treat the ASF.
