The National Press Club (NPC) has expelled a member for a serious breach of journalistic ethics.
MANILA, Philippines — Jaime Aquino, a former provincial correspondent in Pangasinan for the Manila Times, was expelled from the National Press Club of the Philippines (NPC), the country’s largest organization of active members of the press, on Wednesday without the chance of reinstatement.
NPC president Paul Gutierrez said Aquino and his group in Pangasinan have been accused of fabricating bogus rape cases that led to the incarceration for nine months in Pangasinan of Villamor’s client, Lopez, Quezon councilor Arkie Manuel Yulde, at a joint press conference at the NPC building with Palace Undersecretary Joel Sy Egco, Executive Director of Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS), and lawyer Freddie Villamor.
Yulde, a political critic in Quezon, was sentenced to prison based on a rape and kidnapping case invented by Aquino’s group and used to smear his name and character in the media, which resulted in the premature death of his parents.
Yulde was just recently released after Villamor was able to show proof that the charges against him, including his purported rape victim, were likewise false.
Aquino and his entourage, which included his live-in partner, workers, and other dubious members of the Pangasinan press, tried the same deception against Secretary Raul Lambino of the Cagayan Export Zone Authority (CEZA) and his wife, Mangaldan mayor Marilyn Lambino, earlier this year.
Lambino was charged with ten charges of rape, child abuse, and significant physical injuries, while his wife was charged with abuse of authority, grave misconduct, dishonesty, and oppression by their two former house helpers before the Office of the Ombudsman.
However, an inquiry found that the claims leveled against the Lambinos were all made up by Aquino. Prof. Salvador de Guzman, chair of the ‘Citizen Movement Against Crime, Corruption, Illegal Drugs, and Gambling, Inc.’ was also created by Aquino to lend legitimacy to his story.
However, an investigation revealed that Aquino and de Guzman are the same individual and that the ‘citizen movement’ that supported the Lambinos’ supposed victims is also a fictitious group.
“We don’t know which is worse: media organizations fabricating journalists as victims of violence in order to obtain funds from overseas, or journalists fabricating false claims against prominent figures in exchange for money,” Gutierrez added.
“We are immediately announcing Mr. Jaime Aquino’s dismissal from the NPC membership roster, with no hope of reinstatement,” Gutierrez stated.
Gutierrez also reaffirmed the NPC’s demand for journalists to follow their Code of Ethics and not be tempted to utilize criminal tactics to make money or to allow themselves to be used for partisan political activities, especially during this election season.
He also congratulated the Manila Times for firing Aquino on January 18, 2022, after becoming skeptical of the stories he was writing, particularly the smear campaign against the Lambino marriage.
Since 2016, Aquino would be the fourth member of the NPC to be formally expelled for egregious violations of the Journalist Code of Ethics and its policies.
