Free repatriation flights are still available for Filipinos in Ukraine, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

MANILA, Philippines β€” The Philippine government’s offer of free repatriation flights for Filipinos in Ukraine is still on the table, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), despite the region’s rising tensions.

There are currently around 300 Filipinos living in Ukraine.

“Our top priority is to get our fellow Filipinos in Ukraine out of harm’s way and to get them to the nearest locations of safety as quickly as possible,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said in a statement.

“Our offer to take Filipinos to Kiev is in the works and Usec. Sarah Arriola is leading the repatriation campaign for Filipinos who wish to return home,” he said. Arriola is the DFA’s undersecretary in charge of the migrant workers’ issues office.

Six Filipinos have been repatriated from the European country as of February 18.

The Philippine Embassy in Warsaw, which has jurisdiction over Ukraine, dispatched a consular team to Kyiv last week in order to facilitate faster coordination with the Filipino community and necessary authorities.

The DFA’s remark comes as tensions in the region rise following President Vladimir Putin’s announcement that Russia would recognize certain portions of eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk as separate nations.

UN Secretary-General AntΓ³nio Guterres said Moscow’s decision is “a breach of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and contrary with the values of the United Nations Charter,” according to a statement released by his spokesperson.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Embassy in Moscow is ready to assist Filipinos seeking to enter Russia through Ukraine.

“As part of our usual duties here at the Embassy, we remain ready to assist Filipinos who seek to enter Russia on humanitarian or emergency grounds in collaboration with Russian Federation authorities,” the embassy stated in a statement on February 22.

“[W]e note that Russia and the Philippines are both members of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which espouses and promotes safe and orderly migration across borders,” it continued.

However, it encouraged all Filipinos wishing to travel near Russia’s and Ukraine’s borders, particularly the Russian cities of Rostov-on-Don, Belgorod, and Kursk, to be careful and follow the embassy’s and Russian government’s advisories.

The Philippine Embassy in Poland can be reached at +48 604 357 396 (WhatsApp and Viber), +48 694 491 663 (Assistance to Nationals), and warsaw.pe@dfa.gov.ph, according to the DFA.

On the other side, the Philippine Embassy in Russia can be reached at +79067382538. (WhatsApp and Viber).
