In the first two months, the crime rate in GenSan fell by 14%.

CITY OF GENERAL SANTOS – According to the police, crime has decreased by 14.11 percent in the last two months.

Acting local police director Col. Paul Bometivo said that from January 1 to February 28, 426 offenses were reported in the city’s 26 barangays, down from 496 the previous year.

He noted that while stealing cases remained at the top of the list, murder, rape, and physical injury cases all decreased during the period.

According to the official, the scenario arose mostly as a result of the municipal government’s movement limitations in response to the ongoing threat of coronavirus sickness in 2019.

Last January, the city was placed on Alert Level 3, but it was dropped to Alert Level 2 last month.

“The decline in criminal cases was natural,” Bometivo added, “since our economic operations were restricted and not everyone was able to leave their houses.”

Currently, the city is on level 2 of the Alert system.

Since assuming office on January 15, Bometivo claimed they have supplemented the situation with increased law enforcement operations.

He ascribed the decrease in crime to the city’s Oplan Tanglaw Lahi (Terorismo At Negatibong Grupo Labanan At Wakasan, Lokal na Awtoridad at Henerals ay Magka-isa), which includes increased deployment and police visibility at all important areas and places of convergence.

He described the project as a collaborative effort between police and police auxiliaries stationed in critical locations to offer security coverage via static posts, foot, bike, and mobile patrols, as well as anti-criminality activities.
