DUMAGUETE CITY — The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Negros Oriental is increasing the number of inhabitants aged 5 to 17 who are registered with the Philippine Identification System (PIS) (PhilSys).

PSA-Negros Oriental province head Engr. Ariel Fortuito told the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday that this age group was only accommodated towards the end of last year because adults were given precedence in the registration to the national ID program.

The PSA may now accept younger citizens because a major portion of the province’s adult population has already registered, he said.

Fortuito asked parents to bring their children to the national ID program registration centers in their municipality or city.

He did remind the parents, though, that they should be enrolled before their children.

Meanwhile, as of February 28, the PSA-Negros Oriental claimed that 37,631 people have signed up for PhilSys since the beginning of the year.

According to Fortuito, this is 6.38 percent of this year’s objective of 520,300.

President Rodrigo R. Duterte signed Republic Act 11055, or the Philippine Identification System Act, into law in August 2018, with the goal of creating a single national ID for all Filipinos and resident immigrants.

The national ID will be a valid proof of identity that will make public and private transactions, school enrollment, and bank account opening much easier.

It will also improve efficiency, particularly when dealing with government services, as people will only need to provide one form of identification during transactions.
