BACOLOD CITY — As part of the Philippine National Police’s directions, members of the Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) have been ordered not to engage in online gambling or other illicit activities (PNP).

The reminder came on the heels of an incident involving the so-called “e-sabong,” a mobile phone program that permits betting on online cockfighting.

Col. Thomas Joseph Martir, the police city director, ordered a spot search of police officers’ cellular phones at the BCPO headquarters on Friday to assure compliance.

During morning formation, he asked Executive Master Sergeant Santiago Gaitan, the city’s executive senior police officer, to check the phones of non-commissioned officers for online gambling apps at random.

“I’m happy to inform you that no members of the BCPO have been involved in any criminal conduct.” “Through their individual heads and commanders, we will be monitoring the personnel,” Martir said.

He told station commanders and other units to check their personnel’s phones at random to make sure they weren’t engaging in online gambling.

“Any staff found in violation of PNP rules and directions will be dealt with appropriately,” Martir stated.

“E-sabong,” as defined by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation, is online, remote, or off-site wagering/betting on live cockfighting matches, events, and activities streamed or aired live from cockpit arenas permitted or authorized by local government units.

The BCPO said in a statement that the spot inspection of its officers is in accordance with PNP Chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos’ directives and that it is also part of the ongoing program of internal cleansing and increased cleanliness policy among and within the police ranks.
