The G7 reiterates its ‘deep criticism’ of Russia.
On Friday, G7 foreign ministers underlined their “deep disapproval” of Russia’s “unprovoked and illegal war of choice against Ukraine, enabled by the Belarussian government.”
Foreign ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as the European Union’s high representative, issued a joint statement demanding that Russia “immediately cease its ongoing assault against Ukraine, which has severely harmed civilians and destroyed civilian infrastructure, and withdraw Russia’s military forces.”
“With his continued aggression, (Russian) President (Vladimir) Putin has further isolated Russia in the international community, as evidenced by the overwhelming vote at the United Nations General Assembly condemning Russia’s aggression and calling on it to withdraw its forces immediately,” the G7 ministers said.
The statement criticized “Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure, including schools and hospitals,” expressing “heartfelt solidarity with the Ukrainian people and… compassion with the victims of this war and their families.”
Russia was also urged to “fulfill its commitment to fully observe international humanitarian law and human rights legislation,” according to the ministers.
“Ukrainian and UN humanitarian organizations, medical personnel, and non-governmental help providers must be provided immediate safe, fast, and unrestricted access to those in need throughout Ukraine’s entire territory inside its internationally recognized borders,” they added.
“We recognize the news of a humanitarian access agreement as a significant first step. This will have to be done reliably and quickly.”
They urged Russia to “halt its strikes, especially in the immediate proximity of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants,” saying that such an attack would be a “violation of international law standards.”
Civilians killed or injured
The G7 foreign ministers also expressed their “grave worry” about Russia’s “continued strikes against the civilian population of Ukraine’s cities,” which they described as a “catastrophic humanitarian toll.”
“We reiterate that indiscriminate attacks are banned by international humanitarian law,” the statement reads.
“We will hold those responsible for war crimes, including the indiscriminate use of weapons against civilians, accountable, and we welcome ongoing investigations and evidence gathering efforts, including by the International Criminal Court’s Prosecutor,” they added.
The statement also stated that Russia’s “blatant violation” of international peace and security principles, as well as its “breach of international law,” will not go unpunished and that they will continue to “impose further severe sanctions in response to Russian aggression, enabled by the Lukashenka regime in Belarus.”
Disinformation
The G7 countries “condemn the widespread use of disinformation by Russia’s government, connected media, and proxies to support its armed action against Ukraine,” according to the statement.
“Their never-ending flood of false claims is putting more people’s lives in danger.” We pledge to fight Russia’s disinformation effort.”
It also reaffirmed its “support and commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, extending to its territorial waters” within its internationally recognized borders.
“Any supposed change of status achieved by Russia’s continued aggression will not be recognized,” says the statement.
