MANILA, Philippines — In the midst of a fading epidemic and the bright promise of a nation rising beyond the hurdles posed by Covid19, presidential candidate Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. stated on Thursday that the pandemic preparation bill introduced by former senator Miriam Santiago should be revisited.

The measure is intended to ensure that “the country will be equipped to address any future health emergency of this magnitude that threatens and disrupts the public health system.”

At the height of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-COV) pandemic in 2013, Santiago, who ran for president with Marcos as her running partner in 2016, filed Senate Bill No. 1573, or the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act.

The bill aims to “strengthen national response and preparedness for public health emergencies, such as those that result from natural disasters and severe weather, recent outbreaks and pandemics, bioterrorism, mass casualties, chemical emergencies, and radiation emergencies,” and it calls for the creation of a national health strategy in the event of pandemics and national emergencies.

Santiago’s plan, according to the Senate’s official website, may have alleviated the government’s concerns during the Covid19 pandemic’s peak.

Santiago’s measure also called for the development of an emergency fund for pandemics and other disasters every fiscal year.
