MANILA, Philippines — Commissioner George Erwin Garcia of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Thursday that he will refrain from handling matters that he handled before being named as an officer of the poll agency.

Garcia stated in a phone interview that this is to defend the commission’s integrity.

“Of sure, there’s an ethical issue here.” You don’t need someone to file anything for you or to persuade you. Of course, if you have a previous client relationship, you must suppress and refrain from participating. Because your decision or action will be colored in some way,” he added.

Garcia, a seasoned election lawyer, stated that he made this decision on his own and that no one pressured or pushed him to do so.

“I said right away, voluntary and from the start, that I’m going to inhibit from any instances that I manage.” Despite the fact that I do not currently manage any (cases), I have previous relationships with parties, therefore I will absolutely hinder,” the poll body official noted.

He said there are cases with the Clerk of Court, the Electoral Contests Adjudication Department (ECAD), and the Law Department at the Comelec.

“It’s only about 300 cases.” The Supreme Court, as well as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, have more information. I’ve already dropped out of the Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. lawsuit and the Electoral Tribunal of the House of Representatives,” he continued.

On Wednesday, Garcia, fellow commissioner Aimee Neri, and newly-appointed chairwoman Saidamen Balt Pangarungan took office.

Garcia and Neri took over for retiring Commissioners Rowena Guanzon and now Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Kho Jr., while Pangarungan took over for retired Sheriff Abas.

The seven-member Comelec en banc was finalized with their appointments.

Commissioners Socorro Inting, Marlon Casquejo, Aimee Ferolino, and Rey Bulay are the other members.
