MANILA – Malacanang is backing Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III’s order to examine minimum wages nationwide as oil prices rise amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Bello authorized Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards (RTWPBs) around the country to examine minimum wages and submit recommendations by April or May, according to Communications Secretary Martin Andanar, who also serves as the acting presidential spokesperson.

“Nagpahayag na rin ng kaniyang suhestiyon diyan sa pag-increase ng minimum wage and siya naman ay sang-ayon dito,” said Labor Secretary Bebot Bello (Labor Secretary Bebot Bello has given his suggestion on the proposal to increase minimum wage and he supports it). In an interview with DZBB, Andanar said, “I’ll take it from the Labor Secretary na kung iyon ang kaniyang (if that is his) policy.”

Bello, he claimed, will make decisions and implement policies that would benefit the country and Filipinos because he is the President’s “alter ego.”

Bello said the PHP537 minimum wage for the National Capital Region (NCR) is too low on Wednesday.

“We have a minor problem with the PHP537 daily minimum wage (NCR) because of the growing prices,” he said in a statement. “That is why you may hear drivers and operators requesting (fee) increases.”

Fuel price increases, exacerbated by the current crisis between Russia and Ukraine, maybe a “compelling ground for pay boards to suggest modifications in workers’ minimum wages,” according to Bello.

“Hopefully, they’ll have recommendations by the end of April or May.” We also need to be cautious about wage adjustments in order to find a balance between workers’ needs and the employer’s existence,” Bello said.

RTWPBs are responsible for receiving petitions for minimum wage increases in their different locations across the country.
