PopCom says that fewer Covid-19 cases equal better living circumstances.
The global coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) epidemic has wreaked havoc on the country’s health as well as its finances.
Executive Director of the Commission on Population and Development (PopCom), Juan Perez III, claims that provinces with fewer occurrences of Covid-19 are in better shape.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), 809,500 Filipinos or 161,900 households improved their living conditions in the five regions least impacted by the epidemic, or those with 8.1 percent of deaths last year.
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), which includes the provinces of Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, and Basilan, is home to the majority of the households who have been lifted out of poverty.
Poverty, on the other hand, increased among 28,300 families in Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.
According to Perez, Sulu now has the highest percentage of families living below the poverty line, or the amount needed to meet basic food and non-food necessities, at 71.9 percent, or 111,200 families.
The monthly poverty level for a family of five was calculated at PHP12,082 in the first semester of 2021.
BARMM did not record any new Covid-19 cases on January 1 and currently has just 20 active infections, none of which are serious and only one of which is severe.
634 people died out of a total of 15,543 cases in the region.
Between 2018 and 2021, poverty in Lanao del Sur fell by 57 percent, from 68 percent of families to 11 percent, resulting in a huge improvement in the quality of life for more than 500,000 people in the province.
Three years ago, the province had the highest number of poor households, but now ranks eighth, eight notches below the top.
“The rate of poverty reduction in Lanao del Sur is nothing short of remarkable, given that it occurred during a national health and economic crisis. The fact that the province is in a Covid-19-free zone aided the outcome significantly,” Perez stated in a statement on Monday.
In terms of numerical numbers, Cebu has the most poor households (276,000), followed by Negros Occidentales (166,000), Camarines Sur (152,300), Pangasinan (138,600), Bulacan (132,000), and Zamboanga del Norte (132,000). (131,200).
The economy of the regions with the most pandemic-affected areas saw increases in their poverty thresholds, which were substantially beyond their levels in 2018, as well as the pandemic’s collateral impacts.
Central Luzon (+ PHP3,250; 9,001 deaths), Ilocos (+ PHP2,633; 1,891 deaths), National Capital Region (+ PHP2,523; 14,218 deaths), Central Visayas (+ PHP2,450; 1,622 deaths), Cagayan Valley (+ PHP2,044; 1,824 deaths), Calabarzon (+ PHP1,935; 10,386 deaths), and Bicol (+ PHP1,898; 1,141 deaths) are among those that experienced increases as well as Covid-19-
According to data, families in Central Luzon were the hardest hit by the increase in the poverty line, with an additional 190,900 (or 46 percent) becoming poorer in the last three years.
Poverty was also on the rise in Central Visayas, with 173,500 families living below the poverty line in the last three years.
