In Zamboanga City, a water company will replace aging pipelines.
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — To address water losses, the Zamboanga Municipal Water District (ZCWD) is rebuilding its outdated distribution pipes within the city limits.
The project, entitled Mainline Replacement Program Phase 1, will span Barangays Zone 1, 2, 3, 4, and Camino Nuevo’s five downtown communities.
The project will cost PHP20 million, according to ZCWD Board Chairperson James Cesar Makasiar, representing 25% of the PHP80 million funding from the municipal government.
The money for the mainline rehabilitation came from the city’s supplemental budget.
“As the city has grown by leaps and bounds,” Makasiar said in a statement, “ZCWD has deemed it necessary to condemn and replace the town’s ancient infrastructure with bigger and modern pipes.”
“This will result in higher water quality, stable supply pressure, and a reduction in non-revenue water (NRW),” he added.
Water that has been generated but is “lost” before reaching the client is referred to as NRW.
The NRW for the downtown area alone, according to ZCWD general manager Leonardo Rey Vasquez, is estimated to be around 72 percent of the water dedicated for the city proper.
Vasquez expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the city government’s financial assistance, which was made possible by Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar and Vice Mayor Rommel Agan’s initiative.
