Duterte claims to have followed through on his vow to bring peace to Mindanao.

MANILA, Philippines β€” President Rodrigo Roa Duterte believes he has fulfilled his vow to bring peace to Mindanao as his tenure comes to an end in less than three months.

Duterte also credited Bangsamoro leaders for ending the decades-long violence in Mindanao in a prerecorded interview with Pastor Apollo Quiboloy that aired Saturday on SMNI.

Chief Minister Ahod “Murad” Ebrahim of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) was able to “somehow calm” the situation in the region, according to Duterte.

“I believe Mindanao is relatively quiet,” he remarked. “We get along well with the Moro of Mindanao.” And I believe that simply allowing them into our country’s governance and giving them the leeway to govern without interference from armed groups is sufficient.”

Duterte also expressed the hope that the peace and development in Mindanao would continue after his term ended.

“I believe we have fulfilled our military objectives of maintaining peace in Mindanao.” We will be trouble-free, God willing, if the nami-maintain (balance) is maintained. “Of course, I hope and pray,” he replied.

Duterte has opted to keep the current membership of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA), the temporary administration in charge of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region’s executive and legislative powers.

From 2019, the BTA will be in charge of overseeing the three-year transition period, which will be followed by the election of BARMM officials.

Carlito Galvez Jr., Secretary of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU), indicated in February that around 10.3 million euros (PHP601.9 million) in project awards will be executed in support of the Bangsamoro government’s normalization process.

Meanwhile, leaders from the BARMM and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) pledged on Friday to help ensure that the May 9 polls are peaceful, clean, and organized.

The Police Regional Office-BARMM has named 102 areas of concern in this year’s national and local elections in BARMM, according to BARMM police head Brig. Gen. Arthur Cabalona.

According to Cabalona, 99 of the 102 election hotspots are municipalities, with the cities of Cotabato, Marawi, and Lamitan rounding out the list.

According to OPAPRU, 19,345 former MILF combatants have already completed the three phases of the decommissioning procedure, with another 14,000 MILF soldiers set to do so this year.
